Over the course of my academic and professional career, I have published academic, technical, and popular writing on a wide variety of topics in a number of different formats. Rather than combining them into a single, chronological list—which would result in a confusing mix of topics and target audiences—I have divided them by category, with sections for my academic and technical publications, for my work at the Brookings Institution, for articles I have written for Greater Greater Washington and reports for the D.C. Policy Center, and for miscellaneous other work.
Academic Publications
I have authored a number of academic publications, including theses, journal articles, and presentations, on a variety of topics, both related to and unrelated to human geography and spatial analysis. A full list of my academic publications can be found here.
Brookings Institution
Between 2020 and 2023, I worked as a researcher at the Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program, where I authored ten reports (seven as lead author) on topics including place-level assets and their relationships to regional economic and built ecosystems. Urban structure, transit, and disinvestment in minority communities in the United States were primary focuses of my work. A full list of my Brookings Institution publications can be found here.
Greater Greater Washington
Since mid-2016, I have written over sixty articles for Greater Greater Washington, a non-profit publication and advocacy organization that works on land use, housing, and transportation policy in the Washington, DC region. These articles have covered a wide variety of topics, including proposals for improved public transportation in the region, the history of public transportation in the region and of the region more broadly, and local and regional demographics. A full list of my Greater Greater Washington articles, organized by topic, can be found here.
D.C. Policy Center
Between 2017 and 2020, I wrote nearly twenty articles for the D.C. Policy Center, a Washington, DC think tank focused on urban issues in the Washington, DC region. These articles covered a number of topics, including Metrorail’s service cuts and ridership issues in 2017-2018, proposals for improved suburb-to-suburb transit in the DC region, and the demographic history of the region. A full list of my D.C. Policy Center articles, organized by topic, can be found here.
Other Publications
While most of my non-academic publications have been through the Brookings Institution, Greater Greater Washington, or the D.C. Policy Center, I have occasionally written for other venues.
In February and April 2021, I wrote a pair of a pair of articles for a local newspaper, College Park Here & Now, about the history of the incorporation of College Park, Maryland—”The history of College Park’s incorporation“—and its annexations of land post-incorporation—”The history of College Park’s annexations.”

This history turned out to be more complex than I had expected, as it involved a series of attempts in the 1930’s to consolidate all of the municipalities in the US-1 corridor in Prince George’s County, along with a large amount of unincorporated land as far west as the Montgomery County border, into a municipality called “Maryland City.” Had Maryland City been established, it would be one of the state’s largest municipalities today, with over 200,000 residents. I hope to eventually write an article on this failed proposal, as well as one on the 1954 municipal home rule law that effectively ended the incorporation of new municipalities in Maryland.
These articles were followed by an article on the history of College Park’s neighborhood of Branchville in January 2022: “The History of Branchville,” and a two-part series on the history of the College Park Trolley Trail (“History of the Trolley Trail” Part I and Part II) in June and July 2022.
In addition to the articles for College Park Here & Now, I have written one guest contribution for the urbanist website City Observatory, “Mapping Walkable Density,” in which I proposed the “walkshed-adjusted density” measure that I developed for use in my Master’s thesis research.
